Manual and Intelligence & Endurance

I have an employee with 7.5k Manual, 11k Intel, and 15k Endurance.

Confectionist is Int/End, Clerk is End/Man, and Cleaner is Man/End. He's more than qualified for all 3 positions. For money, I need to place him at Confectionist or Clerk. If he want's Manual, Cleaner is the only option but is not a necessary full time piece of the company.

Right now, his Intelligence and his Endurance are far ahead of his Manual. I'm making him a Confectionist because it will help me profit and long term it will help his working stats for some awesome later game jobs presented below.

What good is Manual? The main item would be for General in the Army. General allows you to spy stats daily and if you hoard your army job points, gain a substantial Defense boost without using Energy. The merit for 100 spies and the major bulk bonus for Defense both "require" 1000 Job points, or 100 days at General (10 job points daily).

In my specific employee's position, I'll simply round off his working stats. Right now we'll treat it at Exactly 7,500 Manual.

Assuming he has 0 days in the Army, it will take him 5 days to become a Corporal, then 5 to become Segreant, and so on.

Daily Gains
Rank Days Man Int End
Private5312
Corporal5523
Segreant5835
Master Sergeant51247
Warrant Officer517710
Lieutenant520911
Major5241013
Colonel5281215
Brigadier???331815

We can see that it will take 40 days to become a Brigadier. How much manual will be gained? 5 Days at each rank with the Manual gain from each rank.
= 5 * (3+5+8+12+17+20+24+28)
=  585
Additional, he will gain  240 Intelligence and 330 Endurance
So 7,500 Manual with 585 from ranking up would put us at 8,085 Manual. Gaining 33 Manual daily it will take (10,000-8,085)/33 days, or 58.03 days, rounded up to 59. As Brigadier, 59 days will give 531 job points. 5 days worth of job points, 45, will be required to Rank up to General. This leaves him with 486 job points.

To get to 1,000 job points 52 days will be spent at General. This is
DailyManIntEnd
General402520
In the 59 days as Bridagier, he will gain 1947 Manual, 1062 Intelligence, and 885 Endurance.
In the 52 days as General, he will gain 2080 Manual, 1300 Intelligence, and 1040 Endurance.

If he started pursuing the Army general route now it would take him 40+59+52 = 151 days to rank up and he would gain 585+1947+2080= 4612 Manual, 2602 Intelligence, and 2255 Endurance.

100 days as just General will gain 4000 Manual, 2500 Intelligence, and 2000 Endurance. Ranking up, 5 days at each position, from Private to Brigadier will gain 750 Manual, 330 Intelligence, and 405 Endurance.

The highest working stats would result in joining the Army above 9250 Manual because you will be able to rank up as General immediately However, I have no use for my employee's Manual stat.

If I kept him as a Clerk 6 days weekly and Cleaner 1 day, to help Environment, he would gain 6*18+30 = 138 Manual weekly from daily stat gains With Endurance, he would gain 6*36+15 = 231. If I train him 5x weekly on the day that he is Cleaner, he will gain 250 Manual and 125 Endurance from them. This gives him 388 Manual and 365 Endurance weekly. This method bring him up to the 9250 Manual point in about 4 and a half weeks.

However, instead I have made him a Confectionist. in 7 days he will gain 38*7 = 266 Intelligence and 133 Endurance. From 5 weekly trains it will be a further 250 Int and 125 End. His weekly Intellgence will be 516 and 258. This won't save him 11 days in ranking up in Army, but it will help his future career in different Torn City Companies!

tldr; I'm going to boost his Intelligence and Endurance instead of saving him 11 days in Army

July Recap

Now that July is over with, I figured I'd do a quick write up on what I've accomplished this month and maybe list some goals for August. Happy August!

I returned to Torn on July 1st. I logged in to see that I had earned Medals for Four Years of Service, Anniversaries for 550, 600, 650, and 700 days of marriage. I also had the Discovery Honor Bar which told me my faction had completed a Dirty Bomb before kicking me out for being inactive. Feels nice to log in to 6 merits.

Returning to the game and not being in a faction, I realized I had a rare opportunity to pursue the 500 Kill streak merit, something that would never happen in my faction as we were constantly in war and constantly getting hit.

I started a little late and relied mostly on sluts, but on July 18th I had made it to 500 kills without getting mugged or hospitalized. My previous kill streak was 71, so I earned 3 medals, Skirmish (100), Blitzkrieg (250) and Onslaught (500) the final medal with stars. This also came with 2 honor bars: Killstreaker 2 (100 - Uncommon) and Killstreaker 3 (500 - Rare) .

Since I was not in a faction with Hermetic X like I had been used to, I also figured I would spend some time doing other drugs. Once I logged back in all I took were shrooms. It took me 17 days to take the 50 that I had collecting dust in my bazaar, earning me one of the coolest honor bars IMO: I Think I See Dead People (Rare) . Afterwards I took some Ketamine, but then rejoined my faction and went back to training with Xanax. I'll probably pursue more drug merits. I've already purchased the remaining Ketamine and Opium required (15 and 27 respectively). Opium's funny because I know I started taking it years ago. I also need to purchase 49 Speed and 41 PCP. That's gonna run about 12.5 million, or the price of 1 FHC. Not bad at all!

Another pleasant development was that Foot Russian Roulette was up and running. Ironically, the only item I found in the city this month was an S & W pistol, which is no longer used for RR. There was also an update to the Medical Item system -- Morphine, First Aid Kids, and Small First Aid Kits now restored a percentage of life. This got me thinking: I can lose RR as an effectively free way to use more medical items. From the 16th until the 23rd I played RR until I maxed my medical cooldown (SFAKs have 15min cooldown, so you can take 96 daily) and after my 5000th medical itemearned the Medical Veins (Rare)honor bar . With all the Russian Roulette I played to use medical items, I happened to win 50 games and earned yet another Honor - One In Six (Rare) .

To end the month I earned my final Travel merit: 50 trips to Dubai, Land of Promise (Uncommon) which took incredibly long. As far back as my personal stats graph does, I was at 29 trips in December 2012.

So total merit count. Logging in to Torn I earned 6.
In the month of July I collected 9 more.

In August I know I can definitely collect Ketamine merits and maybe either PCP or Speed, not likely both, but could also probably get Opium if I play more RR. The next Medical item merit for me is using 25,000 items used. That alone will cost roughly 300 million in SFAKs and will take about 7 months to complete if I max my cooldown daily. I'm at 92 viruses coded and each takes 7 days, so that puts completion sometime in September. I can commit about 50 jacket thefts daily, so I expect 2 merits from 7500 Thefts to occur late in August. Crime merits take a crazy amount of time I'm realizing.

I remember this time last year, I was hunting several merits at once. I grinded out 50 LSD, got my Defense and Dex over 1 million, and received two merits for 5k thefts. All in a short period of time. Good times.

Multiple Special Gyms

Today marks a huge achievement for me. I always wanted to have a build of both types of Special Gyms. Originally I was planning on having Frontline Fitness and Mr. Isoyamas, the Defense 8 Dot gym. However, after battle 2.0 was released, 0 damage hits became a thing of the past. Looking at my passive stat bonuses, Dexterity looked even more appealing. At the time I had only trained the stat to help with busting, but now I get to take it to a new level.

You have purchased a membership to Elites. 2015/07/29 7:46:50 PM

Although the general consensus is that the advantage goes to players with balanced stats, this build is something I have wanted for a while and I'm intending on sticking with it. In order to keep this build, Strength and Speed will be essentially equivalent. Combined, they must be 25% than the sum of Defense and Dexterity. At the same time, Dexterity must be 25% larger than the larger of Strength and Speed

At the moment, roughly my stats look like:

StrengthDefenseSpeedDexterity
5%29%29%37%

What it looks like I will be doing is keeping Defense constant at what it is. I don't plan on sinking much if any Energy into it, unless for some reason I acquire or apply to a 10 Star Ladies Strip Club because that will include a +10% Defense gym gains perk. My return to the game has seen a chance to company specials, notably the removal of Fitness Center's Job Points (JP) for Defense. My hope was to work at a Fitness Center and use JP for Defense while utilizing this dual gym setup.

So, it looks like I will be training Dexterity up to a certain % of stats, stop training that all together, and then evenly train Strength and Speed up to certain percentages of total stats.

Strength Defense Speed Dexterity Comment
29%5%29%37%Str+Spd Max%
27.5%5%27.5%40%Dex Max%

The table above is a rough layout of at what point I will be switching between being a physical boss at Frontline Fitness and catching flies like a ninja at Elites. Although the percentages seem to vary slightly, as stat total increases each percent will be equivalent to a few million in stats and an increasing amount of time to train the stats up to the next switch point. By ignoring Defense, its percentage of my stat total will decrease over time. The math behind it is also very convenient. Once my stat total is doubled, Defense will be 2.5% instead of 5%.

I am interested in writing code that will enable users to input their stats, rounded to the nearest million or hundred thousand for convenience, and return what benchmarks to train there stats to. This would have to work for both Frontline and Isoyamas or Elites as well as Balboas and Gym 3000 or Total Rebound. Essentially, it would increment 1 set of stats (ex: Strength and Speed) while the ratio (Strength+Speed) >= 1.25 * (Defense+Dexterity) is preserved, while preserving the ratio of Dexterity >= 1.25 max(Strength,Speed). Ideally the code would stop before the ratio is broken so that one can just not HAVE to go to George's to train a stat that a special gym caters towards. I've already brute forced it in Excel.

Purpose

First, I am aspiring to become a software developer and have only just begun seriously studying and learning to program. I learned some HTML 16 years ago, took a course in Visual Basic 10 years ago, and took a summer class in Java 9 years ago. I'm currently 26 without a college degree and no longer wish to work in restaurants.

The purpose of this blog is to answer questions regarding Torn aka Torn City, a (mostly) text based MMORPG with nearly 17,000 daily players! Torn has provided me with so much enjoyment and excitement. I am motivated to use its challenges as opportunity to practice calculating things for fun and focus on optimization.

What I hope to do is to outline problems as precisely as I can and provide solutions. I will also host data collected. A lot of information on Torn is found in it's Wiki but I will be displaying information I'm using.

Most of the problems in Torn can be solved with arithmetic and algebra. Some problems I hope to model in such a way that I can write code to solve them. I am currently learning Python on Code Academy and I intend on looking at some database languages like SQL. Microsoft Excel is essentially my notebook and scrap paper for running calculations. It can also be used to make a database for some specific Torn problems such as optimizing Education decisions.

This blog will also provide perspective on my play style and what I hope to accomplish. Posts will demonstrate my attitude and priorities when it comes to planning and will at first showcase my solution for my specific circumstances. I hope to expand on problems introduced in this format and solve for general cases.

I do hope to write a few calculators. One project I absolutely intend on building is for users to submit their crime data, total number of crimes in different categories, and tell them which merits they will be closest to obtaining. This will be done by multiplying the closest crime medals by Nerve cost and an estimated percentage success rate. There will also be special cases to look at such as merits for Total Crimes as well as situations where both an Honor Bar and a Medal are awarded for a certain number of crimes. I'm really excited to write this in particular.

I hope you enjoy the blog.

PS: I have some posts from years ago, They could be edited and updated, but I may just write new or similar articles if I'm motivated to look for answers related to those specific problems.

Company + Job Analysis

This post includes a brief list of jobs one can hold and what their benefits may be.

At the time of writing this I am traveling so I cannot check my work stats. I know they around 20k Manual, 55k Intelligence, and 33k Endurance

All relevant data can be found on the wiki at
http://www.torn.com/wiki/Job
http://www.torn.com/wiki/Companies
or in various discussion posts on the forums

Start Jobs:

Army
Assuming I'm a Private, the lowest rank, it would take me 45 days to reach General as each promotion takes 5 days of their respective job points.
Benefits at Rank 10 - General incude
Spy once per day
Earn 10 points for Attack or Defense
This job can be used to help build your Manual stat if you are low work stats, and can be great if you are spending time inactive away from the game to hoard the Army points for Defense gains. There's debate and discussion as to how useful the points are. Generally it is assumed that using more points at once will yield higher gains, so an extended break from the game would hoard the most Army points to use for the gain. I don't know if I'll use this job if I go inactive.

Grocer
20 days to climb the ladder assuming work stats are high enough. After you reach the highest level, Manager, you can steal an energy drink once every 5 days. This Can(hah! PUN! I've been awake for 20 hours, wish I could steal one right now) be worth an additional million or two in weekly income. It's actually not a bad way to make money if your work stats are low.

Education
Higher work stats required to max out, 30 days to climb to the top, which is very well worth it because it will decrease Education time by 10%. This will speed things up immensely, especially stacked with Adept faction bonus and merits towards education time. This is also a good job to be in if you wish to go inactive or want to grow your work stats for other jobs.
At Principal, the highest rank, you gain 30 Manual and Endurance, along with 40 Intelligence daily. On top of that the other job specials allow you to trade 10 job points (you earn 7 daily) for 100 Intelligence, Manual, or Endurance. Effectively an extra 70 points of the state of your choice bonus each day. Want to make extra money at a company job? Or are your lacking in a stat needed for promotion in another job (like Manual for Military, Intelligence for Medical, or Endurance for Law?) Boom! I had this job for a while and am very thankful for it.

Law
Takes 25 days to climb to the top. Once you get the highest job you gain a 10% passive increase in crime success. Less Browns and Reds will give you more money and crime exp. I don't have this yet, but I am totally going to if I am every actively pursuing higher end Organized Crimes (I currently Kidnap Mayor with reasonable success and haven't taken many chances with harder or higher fail crimes. I don't intend on ever doing the Hacking crime because I don't want to lose any Crime Exp)

Medical
30 days until Brain Surgeon. Once you get to Brain Surgeon you can revive people. This costs you 75 energy without faction bonuses, and can earn $1m or more each time. You are also able to steal medical items at a rate of 1 Morphine/day, 1.75 FAKs/day, 3.5SFAKs/day.

------------------------------------------------
That's basically everything I need to say about starter jobs.

Company Jobs are different in that they have different specials, pretty much require daily logins, and drug users must rehab more frequently before they drop in effectiveness and get yelled at by boss or lose job.

Sweet Shop is like the Grocer job, you can steal Energy Drinks with job points, but at a more frequent rate: 1 every 2 days instead of 5. This is better supplemental income, and can even be used for your own purposes:
http://torncitytips.blogspot.com/p/energy.html
This blog post lists the values of energy drink cans. They can be used for money, or they can be used for more E. Assuming each Gym Train costs 10e, and assuming an equal distribution for probability (I have NO numbers or evidence to back this up) you receive 2.5 extra trains every 2 days, or 1.75 extra trains each day. I thought that was interesting so I'd mention it. I'm unfamiliar with Energy Can prices, but you could think of them as an extra mil/day from sales?

This will be updated later 17-7-2013

MYdeal Private Island

Fully Upgraded Private Island Costs Without Discounts
Not counting cheaper deals from players,

Private Island costs $500,000,000 for 2000 Happy
Law 2910 will give a 5% discount, so $475,000,000

Note: ELBT stock benefit gives a 10% discount to upgrades, however, at the current price of $139/share, and 5,000,000 shares required, nearly $700,000,000 ($700m) would be required to utilize it. For the sake of this article, ELBT is not an option.

Hot tub, Sauna, Open Bar, are no brainers. Bunched together, these will cost $38,000 and will add 100 Happy to the property. The Large Pool and the Advanced Shooting Range, at $500,000 and $250,000 respectively, are very cheap in relation to the cost of the property. They are no brainer purchases. Together $750,000 for 200 Happy.
On generic small upgrades, we've spent $788,000 for 300 Happy. With the above logic, no PI should have less than 2300 Happy.
2300 Happy PI should cost $500,788,000 or $475,788,000
Note the advantages of Swimming Pool +2% gym gains (aka Steadfast 2 for $0.5m) and Shooting Range +2% damage.

Now, large costs.
Vault's cost $20m, $42m, and $98, for 50, 75, and 100 Happy. They hold $100m, $300m, $500m.
$400,000 then  $560,000 then $980,000 for each happy. Lollipops cost $25 for 25 Happy. You can eat 2, 3, or 4. $400,000 or $25? Happy gain clearly doesn't justify owning a vault. But how much money can you expect to have on hand? I don't know if I will own a vault before or after maxing out the bank at $2bil. The convenience of keeping the cash safe if nice, but how often do I get attacked? how big are the mugs? money can be held in Xanax once bank is maxed.

The Airstrip is a necessity for income. It grants 250 Happy at the cost of $75,000,000. The Pilot gives another 50 Happy for $30,000 daily. The Airstrip saves on travel TIME, and makes flights free. It also allows 10+ travel items. The math with calculating the value gets a little tricky and iffy.
Taking Crocus for example, you expect $16,000 per hour per flower profit. Another example would be the Tribulus Omanense. Profit is about $90,000 per flower, but a round trip takes 6.3 to 6.5 hours, or about $15,000. For rounding purposes we'll use $15,000 as hourly flower profit. With the additional 10 flowers, the Private Island Airstrip allows $150,000 additional profit per hour of traveling. To pay for $75,000,000 considering only the $150,000 hourly profit, would take 500 hours. That's a daunting number, but consider Cayman Islands and Canada take about an hour. Dubai takes 6.5 hours. You're looking a few hundred trips to pay off the Airstrip when considering only the additional 10 items. If you've already paid off your $10m Large Suitcase, the total time and trips decreases. You still get 5 items per flight, and you aren't paying for each flight. Cumber or 3* Cruise Ship will help.
Assuming you are like this author and can carry 22 items per trip, 75m/(22*0.015m) = 228 hours traveling. It's doable.

The Medical Facility costs $17,000,000 ($17m) and gives 50 Happy. It's major bonus is that every 15 minutes you regenerate 30% of your health instead of 20%. This makes a difference when your faction is warring or if you're involved in attacking or getting attacked. I believe for it to be effective you must staff a Doctor. He'll cost $25,000 daily and add another 25 Happy. $17million is not that much once you've considered all the other costs. It will depend on play style.

Sufficient Interior Upgrade is a commitment to waste $125,000,000 for 500 Happy.
Superior Interior Upgrade will grant 1000 Happy at a cost of $250,000,000.

I'm still not sure if I'll be getting the interior upgrades. Xanax current price is $820m. The Superior Interior would cost 305 Xanax. Curiously, I don't know if the stat cap will be hit after that many.

I can say with certainty that I would not buy a Yacht. $895,000,000 for an extra 500 Happy. I will not go through all the math with the training formula and anticipating gains, but a Yacht is worth almost 1100 Xanax. That's enough Xanax to always be on Xanax for a year.

That breaks down my thoughts on the Private Island Property, not counting staff.
$476-501 million for 2300 Happy. $551-576m for generic non interior upgrades, and an Airstrip and pilot, for 2600 Happy. Again, staff has not been considered.

A fully upgrade Castle has 2700 Happy without staff, cannot travel, but will only cost $415,788,000. Not including any vault, 2600 Happy for $317,788,000.

I'm now noticing trends. Return to article later. $788,000 will be spent on upgrades regardless. Hm.
